once the baby is engaged in the birth canal there won't be any room for

No, I wouldn't characterize labor pains as menstrual pains, intense or
otherwise. It's a very all-encompassing pain that can't really be described.
It's a very deep and intense ache, a mix of sharp and dull at the same time.
Back labor is completely different, I hear, though I never experienced it.
